Grenada Lake, Grenada, Mississippi was the location for the inaugural Kids Fishing & Education high school team tournament on Sunday march 29. Ten teams competed for $7,200 in scholarships and prizes. Mother Nature brought cool temperatures and high winds, but that didn’t stop these students from giving it their all on tournament day, even a team all the way from Brighton, Tennessee. Even though fishing conditions proved to be tough, with the help of some great boat captains every team was able to weigh in.

The first place team of Marshall Taylor and Joshua Gafford, representing Grenada high and being captained by Kevin Jones Jr., sponsored by the Missouri Corn Growers Association/American Ethanol, weighed in a 7 fish limit at 12.34 pounds. The team was awarded $2,500 for their achievement.

The team of Cody Cahill and Justin Schmidt came in second place with the weight of 2.65 pounds and received $1,500 in scholarship money. The weight of 2.65 pounds came from one fish that held on to be the big fish of the tournament and earning them a Humminbird 899 SI graph.

Coming in third place was the team of Hayden Breland and Noah Porter, they received a $1,000 scholarship that was kindly donated by Dolly Marascalo of Sav-mor Drug store in Grenada, Mississippi.

The team of Michael Turner and Justin Ladner received the G3 Bonus $1,000 scholarship for the highest placing team fishing in a G3 Boat.

The fourth and fifth place teams received Bass Pro Shops Memphis $50 gift cards, sixth, seventh and eighth place teams all received a gift package donated by Fish Balls. Ninth and tenth place teams received a gift package donated by Crappie Masters, Bug Band, and Mid South Tackle.

During the award ceremony, when asked what was the motivation to compete in a fishing tournament the majority answered “for the scholarships offered”. Students mentioned pursuing a wide range of majors from veterinary medicine to youth ministry. We wish them all success in their chosen fields and a lifetime of enjoying the great outdoors.

A huge thank you goes to all the boating captains that freely give their time and equipment to allow these students to compete. Martin Metal, Road Runner and B&B Fishing all sponsored a team.

Special thanks to the Grenada Tourism Commission, the city of Grenada and the Army Corp of Engineers for supporting this event from the very beginning and assisting us along the way.

Special thanks to our National Sponsors that include; Crappie Masters, G3 Boats, Bug Band, Humminbird, Minn Kota, Talon, and Johnson.
